Kirill Serebrennikov was born in 1969 in Rostov-on-Don. Graduated in physics from the Rostov State University in 1992. Since 1994 staged in Rostov theatres.
His first Moscow production is Plasticine by Vassily Sigarev at the Playwright and Director Centre (2001). His productions in Moscow theaters are: Some Explicit Polaroids by Mark Ravenhill at the Pushkin Theatre, Terrorism and Playing the Victim by the Presnyakov brothers, The Petty Bourgeoisie by Maxim Gorky, The Forest by Alexander Ostrovsky, The Golovlyov Family by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh at the Moscow Art Theatre, Sweet Bird of Youth by Tennessee Williams, The Naked Pioneer by Mikhail Kononov, Antony and Cleopatra. A Version by Shakespeare at the “Sovremennik” theatre, C. E. O. by Stieg Larsson at the Playwright and Director Centre, The Demon by Mikhail Lermontov at the 814 Theatrical Association.
His stage adaptations of music pieces include Joan of Arc at the Stake (Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher) by Arthur Honegger (Moscow International House of Music, within the framework of the Vladimir Spivakov invites… festival, with the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Spivakov), Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi (Mariinsky (Kirov) theatre, conducted by Valery Gergiev), Persephone by Igor Stravinsky (Moscow International House of Music, within the framework of the Chereshnevy Les festival, with the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Ion Marin), Mysterion (after De Temporum Fine Comoedia by Carl Orff, Chaikovsky Concert Hall, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, within the framework of the Territory festival), scenic cantata Deae ex Machina by Andreas Mustukis and opera The Station by Alexei Sioumak (Musica Aeterna Ensemble, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, at the Winzavod – Centre for contemporary art, within the framework of the Territory festival), The Golden Cockerel (at the Bolshoi Theatre, conducted by Vassily Sinaisky), American Lulu by Alban Berg / Olga Neuwirth (Komische Oper Berlin, conducted by Johannes Kalitzke, — now in production).
He is also author of the concept and stage director of the international charity project Requiem (by Alexei Sioumak, with the Russian National Orchestra, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, at the Moscow Art Theatre).
Since 1991 Kirill Serebrennikov directs on TV, since 1998 is a film director. In 1999 he was awarded with Tefi (Russian national prize for TV) for directing. Among his other awards are Triumph, Stanislavsky International prize, Chaika, Crystal Turandot. His film work includes The Swallow, Mysteries of the Storm, The Undressed, The Diary of a Murderer, Rostov-Daddy, Bed Stories, Playing the Victim (Grand-prix of Kinotavr film festival and of Rome film festival), Yuriev Den, Betrayal (in competition at the Venice Film Festival 2012). Kirill Serebrennikov is also a laureate of the Locarno film festival.
Since 2006 Kirill Serebrennikov is one of the art-directors of the international festival-school Territory. Since 2008 he teaches at the Moscow Art Theatre School, where he has a class of young actors and directors. Since 2011 he is artistic director of the Seventh Studio and founder of the Platform project. Since 2012 he is artistic director of Gogol Center in Moscow.
