Meeting with the creators of the play “Octavia. Trepanation"

About performance

Students of the International Festival—School of Contemporary Art Territory will meet the creators of the opera Octavia. Trepanation: director Boris Yukhananov, composer Dmitri Kourliandski, stage designer Stepan Lukyanov and costume designer Anastasia Nefyodova. 

They will speak about the making of the production, comment on the use of music and stage devices, and tell the story behind the performance. They will also explain how the current production is different from the one presented at at Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam, as part of the Holland Festival in June 2017. 


Boris Yukhananov is a Russian director, producer and actor working in theatre, film and television, as well as a teacher, writer and artist. He studied directing under Anatoly Efros and Anatoly Vasiliev at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts and in 1985 founded Teatr Teatr—Russia’s first independent theatre group. A key figure on the country’s underground art scene in the 1980s, he was among the founders of the parallel cinema movement launched in opposition to the state-endorsed Soviet cinema and associated with Cine Fantom film club, studio, and newspaper. In 1988 he founded the Individual Directing Studio (MIR). Boris Yukhananov has staged over 40 plays. In 2013 he became the head of Stanislavsky Drama Theatre, which under his directorship became Stanislavsky Electrotheatre—one of the most dynamic experimental stages in Moscow. 


Dmitri Kourliandski is music director at Stanislavsky Electrotheatre, one of the most acclaimed contemporary composers, whose works are played at the world’s biggest theatre festivals  and concerts by famous orchestras. He has taken part in and won several prestigious music competitions. He is the artistic director of the International Young Composers Academy in the city of Chaykovsky, and one of the founders of Structural Resistance group (StRes). He is a frequent collaborator of conductors Teodor Currentzis, Fyodor Lednyov and Reinbert de Leeuw among others. 


Stepan Lukyanov is an artist, head stage designer at Stanislavsky Electrotheatre, artistic director at Cine Fantom film club and Moscow Design Museum. From 1992 to 1996 he studied and worked at Boris Yukhananov’s Individual Directing Studio (MIR). He has been a stage and set designer for a number of theatre productions and films, including VMayakovsky (directed by Alexander Shein, 2017) and has designed displays for several exhibitions. He has taken part in Russian and international exhibitions, competitions and festivals. He received the award of the London Design Biennale for the Russian display in 2016. 


Anastasia Nefyodova is a costume designer, chief designer at Stanislavsky Electrotheatre. She has also worked in film and on television. She designed over 350 costumes for Boris Yukhananov’s production of The Blue Bird. In 2016 she received a Golden Mask award for Best Costume Design in a Musical Production with the opera series The Sverlians. She also works with Alexandrinsky Theatre and Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre and teaches at the HSE Art and Design School and Individual Directing Studio (MIR).
